College Essay Examples for 13 Schools + Expert Analysis
Marketing Where Technology Intersects Life. Whether you’re in a commercial, as my grandson Kameron Badgers is in this set photo, a feature film, or a television series, how you list your credits matters to casting directors. Several years ago, a director spotted my grandson juggling at a local festival, and well college asked him to come in for war research papers, a part in a national commercial. The casting director sent an email: “Arrive at 10 a.m., and bring a headshot and resume.” I had NO idea what an actor’s resume should look like, and well written application essays the tips I found online weren’t very helpful since they focused on on mind, people who actually had credits. My 8-year-old did not. Since then, he’s amassed quite a nice resume for a 13-year-old junior high school kid.
But it wasn’t until recently that his (amazing) agent shared the rules for creating a professional actor’s resume. Written College Essays! I’m sharing them here, because I think a lot of other parents and beginning actors are as clueless as I was about them. Acting Resume Rule # 1: Divide your credits by type. List feature films, short films, industrials, television, theater, and manajemen keuangan commercials in separate categories. Most actors have a commercial resume and a theatrical resume. Most film and application essays television actors do not list modelling, theater or commercial credits on their resume. You should talk to your agent about how to argumentative research what to include on your resume – and what to leave off. Awhile back, I was waiting outside an acting class listening to one mother bemoaning the fact that her son was only well written essays, cast as a bully or a gang member. She showed a copy of how to for an research his resume to application essays, the parents in the room, and short essay it was obvious why casting people thought of him for those roles first: half of the one-page resume consisted of the karate, mixed martial arts, and boxing titles he’d won. Another parent suggested eliminating most of that and well written essays simply listing karate, mixed martial arts, and boxing among her child’s other skills on the resume.
Among the other things that your agent might (or might not) want you to omit from how to write paper your child’s resume are academic achievements, child beauty pageant titles, and catalog or print modeling jobs. The key here is to ask your agent – and if you don’t have an agent, ask an experienced professional acting coach. Acting Resume Rule #2: Use the right terminology. Television, film, and commercials use different terms, and none of well college application essays them use the same terms as theater. How To Write An Introduction For An! There are no Principals in essays, film, and no Leads in a commercial. Education! (Note that the word is principal , not principle . Spelling counts.) The following terms are generally accepted.
FILM: Lead (or Starring ), Supporting Lead , Supporting Featured, Supporting, Extra. TV: Series Regular , Guest Star , Co-Star , Featured, Supporting Note: Co-star and Guest Star roles can also recur, just add it (i.e. Recurring Guest Star, 6 episodes, Season 2 ). Acting Resume Rule #3: No one knows your character’s name. Most of the casting directors who see your resume will have no clue about well written application your character’s name — and even fewer will care. All they care about is whether you were the on importance of time management lead, a supporting actor, or an extra. If you want the name of your character in application, your credits, list it as Lead/Mary or Supporting (Mary) . Be consistent in your formatting.
If you list one role as Lead/Mary , don’t list the essay management next one as Supporting (Hannah). If you work as an extra, your character probably won’t have a name anyway. Written College Application Essays! If you are a beginning actor or you are preparing a resume for war research papers, a child actor who works as a background performer or extra, it’s ok to provide a description instead of a name, but don’t attempt to mislead about the size of the role by application essays naming a character if you are an “unrecognizable talent”. My teen actor, for example, was very visible in the trailer and in frankenstein essays a couple of scenes in a TV show — or at least his back, profile, and well application body (minus his head) were. Manajemen Keuangan! He got an written application essays, IMDB credit for the role, but it isn’t on his resume for write an introduction argumentative research paper, the simple reason that no one could tell it was him. The kid standing next to him, who was equally unrecognizable, lists the well written application role on his resume and named his character. Write For An Argumentative! That’s his family’s choice, but I don’t recommend it. Acting Resume Rule #4: Don’t guess — don’t lie. If you aren’t sure what kind of role you booked, ask your agent. Well! No agent? Check IMDB or Google.
You can bet the casting director will! I once overheard a casting director chewing a parent out. It seems the mom had listed her child as Lead Series Regular on a well-known TV series when the kid was actually a Recurring Guest Star who appeared in a multi-episode story arc. Manajemen! The mom was in tears when she came out. Written College Essays! She hadn’t meant to lie — she just didn’t know there were specific words she should have used. If you don’t have any credits to put on your resume, list your training and peace amateur experience (by amateur, I mean things like school or college plays, community theater, and student films), and get some experience as quickly as you can. Unpaid roles, student films, work as an written college, extra, and other “blink and you miss him” parts won’t stay on your resume long — just enough to essay of time management in student life, let the casting director know that you’re fresh talent looking for well, that all-important break. Keuangan! Replace them when you have more impressive credits to list. Acting Resume Rule # 5: Always include the essays director’s name. When you list your film and TV credits, the essays on mind key information is the name of the film or television show, your role (lead, supporting, etc.), and well written application essays the director’s name. Other information, such as a particular TV show season or episode name, and the name of the production company, is optional.
Here are some correctly formatted examples. Salem — Series Regular (Season 3) — Directors, David Von Ancken, Alex Zakrewski. Other information, such as the season and essay in student life episode name or number, is optional. For instance, you might list a credit like this to make it easier for someone to written application essays, reference a specific role: X-Men: The Gifted — Guest Star (Pilot, High School Student) — Director, Bryan Singer.
The production company or network is optional. If you use it, this is short essay how it’s formatted. X-Men: The Gifted — Guest Star (Pilot, High School Student) — 20th Century Fox Television, Director, Bryan Singer. Murder Made Me Famous — Supporting (Season 2, Episode 3, Jean Harris, High School Student) — REELZ Channel/AMS Pictures, Director, Brad Osborne. Daylight’s End – Supporting – Director, William Kaufman.
Bonnie and Clyde: Dead and Alive – Supporting – Director, Bruce Beresford. Bernie — Supporting, Carthage Texas Police Officer — Castlerock Entertainment, Mandalay Pictures, Director, Richard Linklater. The Hobbit — Stunt Coordinator, An Unexpected Journey — New Line Cinema, Directors, Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis. Note that, just as in well, a television series, adding the name of the studio or production company is optional. Also note that if you work as a part of the crew (as in the stunt coordinator example above), the format is the same as it is for an actor. JP Morgan/Chase — Supporting, College Savings Campaign 2017. Las Vegas Convention Visitor’s Bureau — Supporting, What Happens in Las Vegas ( Spanish Visitor Campaign), 2016. Note that the director is not listed on commercial credits, although if you know the in frankenstein essays director’s name, or it is an well, award-winning campaign, it is perfectly acceptable to list the ad agency and/or the essays director. If the commercial is part of a long-running campaign, be sure to specify what ad you are in unless you are the principal in the series. What Goes on well written college, a Resume (Besides Credits)
Besides your credits, here are the things that should be on an ADULT actor’s resume: Name, email, phone number, agent’s name contact information, union status (SAG, SAG-eligible, non-union, etc.), height, weight, eye and hair color, and other “vital statistics”. Note that age is not on this list for adult actors. A CHILD or TEEN actor’s resume has the same requirements as an adult’s resume, but must also include the child’s age, a parent or agent’s email and phone number instead of the child’s direct contact details, work permit status (state, expiration date if your state requires an proposal thesis manajemen, annual permit), and Coogan Trust status (some states like California and well written college New York require that a portion of a child or teen actor’s earnings go into a special trust fund that neither the child nor his/her parents can touch until the child is an war research, adult, and you must have one set up in order to work in those states). Written Essays! Note that age is REQUIRED for anyone under the essays age of 18. If you are represented by an agency, make sure you follow the directions your agent provides for your resume. Some, for example, want only their contact information on a resume while others allow non-union actors to application essays, submit themselves for projects that aren’t being cast through the agency, such as student films, roles as an extra, and other unpaid or low-paid projects. Here are things that should never be on anyone’s resume: home address, social security number, date of essays on mind birth, or mother’s name. Why? Because they could be the keys to identity theft and other dangerous practices.
Last, but not least, your acting resume should have sections for Special Skills Talents (this is where you list things like military training, and the sports performing skills that might make you sought-after for well essays, a role — anything from essays on mind and body horseback riding to surfing, archery to juggling can be listed here), Training (acting-related education classes/workshops go here if they are significant), and links to your online demo reel and written college application any important sites like IMDB where a casting director could learn more about you. If you have any of the following skills or real-life experience, they should always be on an adult actor’s resume: law enforcement or military experience, medical or first-responder experience, sports skills or experience beyond the essays and body high school level, musical talent of any kind. Think about how many TV shows and movies need prison guards, police officers, crime scene technicians, doctors, nurses, firemen, or coaches, athletes, referees or officials. Written College Essays! There are almost always parts for extras or actors who can play these parts — and who better to play a cop or security guard than someone with real-world experience? Who better to war research papers, handle a prop weapon than someone who knows how to well essays, handle the real thing thanks to military service? How to Deliver an Actor’s Resume to Casting.
When asked to essays, bring a resume and headshot to well college application, a face-to-face audition, most actors use 8X10? headshots (more of short essay head-and-shoulder shots, as casting wants to see more than your face so they can get an idea of your body type), with their resume printed out and affixed to the back. Many of the companies that print headshots will print your resume on the back of written your photo if you are willing to essays on mind and body, pay the price. College Application Essays! That works for essays and body, established actors/actresses who have major credits that won’t change quickly, but it doesn’t usually work for child actors or those who are trying to quickly upgrade and update their resume to well written college essays, improve the essay in student life quality of their credits. So type your resume on plain white paper. College Essays! Use a sans serif font, and 11 or 12 point type. Keep the resume to less than one page. Once you’ve printed it out, neatly trim off the margins neatly. (I use an exacto knife, a metal ruler as a straight edge, and a cutting board, but if you have a paper cutter, that will do, too.)
Then use a glue stick to war research, attach it to the back of the application photo. Don’t overdo the on mind glue — you don’t want it wrinkled. If you have one, use a rolling pin or “brayer” (a tool designed specifically to keep paper flat as it’s glued down) to make the edges smooth. If you don’t have glue, you can use clear tape — but be aware that tape yellows, and will sometimes pick up odd bits of dust or fluff that show up as the well college essays tape ages. Don’t use staples. You don’t want YOUR resume to be the one that causes a casting director to bleed when a staple punctures a finger rifling through a stack of thesis keuangan paper. Don’t prepare a lot of college essays extra resumes unless you have a lot of scheduled auditions/meetings with agents of managers. If you are submitting yourself through one of the online casting sites, the of time management in student life resume they see will be the one formatted by written college application essays their site, and on importance your headshot will be submitted in the size and format it is hosted on written application, that site. If you are submitting a headshot and resume via email, make sure that (a) your resume is formatted as an Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word file, and war research papers that if you are submitting a Word file all of the changes/corrections you’ve made have been “accepted” so that the recipient can’t view earlier versions of the resume. Don’t assume that the recipient can view a Google “doc” file or any other format; (b) that your headshot is a reasonable file size. Don’t try to well college, send a 4 or 5 gigabyte file, as many email systems can’t handle them and casting directors don’t want to fill their hard drives up with huge photo files.
It shouldn’t have to how to paper, be said, but have someone else proofread the resume CAREFULLY, double checking phone numbers, hyperlinks (if used) and email addresses to written college essays, make sure they work. Update Casting Sites When You Update Your Resume. Keeping casting sites updated has to be the bane of most actor’s existence. It’s not that hard to update your resume when you sign a new contract — and yes, resumes should be updated when you are officially cast, not after you’ve filmed your role. But if you have profiles on four or five sites, each with their own unique content management system and how to an introduction argumentative research format, it’s a pain to update all of them. Written College Application Essays! Do it anyway, and do it when you sign a contract. Why? Because a signed contract could preclude you from consideration for another role, and you don’t want to waste your time or the peace short essay casting director’s time.
For example, a friend of my grandson’s signed to well college application, film a very well paid commercial for how to for an argumentative research, a video game. In the two months after he signed the contract, but before he filmed the commercial, he was cast in and filmed an written college application, industrial for a computer company. The week before he was to film the commercial, casting notified him that he’d been replaced because the industrial he filmed for the computer company was considered a conflict. So he lost a job that would have paid well over $15K for one that paid less than $800. Essay On Importance Of Time Life! Had he updated his resume on all the casting sites as well as on paper, the computer company wouldn’t have hired him — they’d have seen the potential conflict, too.
The most important online casting site is IMDB — the Internet Movie Database. Well Written College Application! You’ll be listed there when a production company that hires you lists your credit. Once that happens, you can sign up for an IMDB Pro account and begin keeping photos and short essay credits online, even when the producer doesn’t list your credit with IMDB. I’ve never known anyone to actually be cast because they were on IMDB. So why is well it the on importance management in student most important? Because it ranks first in Google searches, and having a profile there marks you as a “professional” actor in well application essays, the minds of many — including the Internal Revenue Service. (You can only deduct certain expenses on write for an argumentative research, your taxes if the IRS decides you’re a “professional” actor.) The other casting sites you should be registered with, and keep updated are: If you are registered with MyCastingFile.com, Central Casting, or any of the other databases for movie extras, make sure you keep those resume sites updated as well. Note that the written college application essays casting sites listed here are all free.
Don’t waste your time or money on short, high-cost sites that charge a monthly listing fee to well college application, “help you get noticed”. It’s particularly important to education, keep your agent up to date on any jobs you accept as an college essays, extra, because working as an extra on a television series or film franchise (a multi-part film, like Star Wars) can block you from later being cast in war research papers, a bigger part. Agents don’t want to well written college application, look bad by submitting someone who’s already worked on a project — and you don’t want to waste the time and in frankenstein essays effort auditioning only to be told you can’t be cast. As always, make sure you follow your agent’s instructions on well essays, how and where to list your credits online, and make sure that you are listed correctly in the databases with your representation clearly stated — especially if you have multiple agents for essay of time in student life, multiple regions, or different agents for written essays, commercials, film, modeling, etc. What would you list as a featured extra role? If you were a couple? If your character doesn’t have lines, and isn’t assigned a name, use a description of the character. “Art Show Patron”, “wedding guest”, “kissing couple”. If your character has lines but isn’t assigned a name, describe your line “woman who asks if Verizon got a trophy”, “man who argues with police officer.”
If your background character has neither lines nor a name, and how to write for an research paper is part of a crowd scene, simply list “background extra, episode name/number” for a TV series, or “refugee woman, battle scene” in a movie. Peter Jackson’s daughter Katie once listed her role in Fellowship of the well written application essays Ring As, “big eyed child”. An actor I know listed his role as a zombie in a well-known show as, “blood-covered zombie chasing (famous actor)”. Assigning your uncredited character a name is essays on mind another option some people use. “Greaser teen”, “punk princess” or “Bobby the well college essays nerdy kid” are examples AI have seen. Ask your agent how to handle extra roles on your resume, and if you don’t have an agent, ask your acting coach. Different parts of the country seem to handle it in different ways. The goal, of course is to war research, get to well written college, a point where you don’t need to list extra roles. Be sure you get the keuangan name of the written application production company, the casting company, the war research papers project, and the AD or Director for your scenes — you’ll need them for some of the well written application online casting sites and to proposal, get an well college essays, uncredited listing onto IMDB. On my acting resume, I mostly have work as an extra, but I use the word “background” in place of the in frankenstein essays word “extra”, is application essays this acceptable on an acting resume? In general, if you are seeking work as an war research papers, extra or background player, list those credits on your resume.
But if you are putting together a general resume for a featured or lead role, many experts say not to college application, list them. Back when there was a Screen Extras Guild, most people had two resumes — one for extra roles, one for other roles – just the way people have commercial resumes and film/TV resumes today. The common belief is education in frankenstein that if you show up with a resume filled with roles as an extra, that’s all you’ll be considered for. So most experts say, “Take the well paycheck, don’t list the credit.” I live in a smaller market (Dallas, TX), and on mind the actor in well college, my household is war research only in the 8th grade.
He doesn’t list his extra credits on well college application, his main resume, and has separate credit lists for proposal manajemen keuangan, different kinds of roles. This week, for college, example, he is filming a recurring role in a TV series, and the resume that he gave to the casting director had no roles as an extra listed — but this weekend, he’s working as a “featured background player” (an extra guaranteed screen time) on a film, and the resume he used to get that gig did list a number of roles as an extra. That’s the way his agency suggested we do it. I have an adult son who has worked as a stunt performer for many y ears, and he does not list all of education in frankenstein his credits on his resume, either — just the ones he thinks are relevant for written application essays, a particular casting director or role. He does not list “day player” or extra gigs, although I know he has taken them from time to time when things were slower than he liked. Ask your agent about essay on importance this, and if you don’t have an agent, talk to your acting coach. College Application Essays! They’ll know what casting directors in peace essay, your area want. I do know that it’s different in well written college, smaller markets than in and body, LA or New York, largely because in well written essays, smaller markets casting directors know that actors have fewer opportunities to proposal keuangan, work at their craft.
If you are listing your work as an written, extra, I don’t think it matters whether you call it being an extra or being a background player. I’ve seen it done both ways. It does seem to matter whether you are in a scene with one of the principals, and were guaranteed screen time, or whether you are simply part of a crowd. Sorry I don’t have a definitive answer for you! Thanks this was very helpful. My daughter virtually no experience. She was an extra in 2 movies coming out within the next 2 years. She was in on importance in student, multiple scenes, but as an extra. I read somewhere not to put in well written application essays, extra work so I was unsure. Also the Center where she studies dance has put on a few productions that she has been in. Essay Management In Student Life! Would I include them or just leave them blank.
I don’t want to pad her resume or anything, but I would like to show she can dance and essays has been in front of a large audience in a theater production, and has been on a set before. OR should I just leave it blank or put No Experience. And just put training and essays on mind and body add Extra work and well written college application Dance productions to Special Skills?Thank you in Advance for how to an introduction for an, your reply. I think most people include extra work on their resumes in the beginning. Well Written College Essays! If your daughter worked as an and body, extra in written application, a TV series, here are a couple of ways to education, list it on her resume: Dallas , Season 9, Episode 2, Extra, Director, John Smith. Salem , Season 1, 6 episodes, Servant Girl (Recurring Background), Directors, Susan Jones, James Washington. In a film, you’d like the application essays extra credit the same way as a regular role, just identify it as being an extra. If you have an agent, your agent will instruct you how to handle theater or dance performances.
If you don’t, it seems to be a matter of personal preference. If your daughter performs with a well-known dance company, or is cast in a theatrical production as a dancer, then it should be listed in a category like “Theater/Live Performances” –this is also where you’d put things like performing at a theme park, or any other live show. If it’s just a dance-school recital, then it probably shouldn’t be listed unless that is (literally) all you have to start with. As your daughter’s resume grows, you’ll constantly be editing it and taking off “lesser” credits. It’s important to essay of time management, keep the resume to one page, including contact information, so it won’t be long before you’remmaking choices about what to put on, and written what to leave off. One thing I’ve seen often on acting resumes is a summary of someone’s experience at the top, right underneath the person’s name “vital statistics”. Education In Frankenstein! Something like, “Experienced musical theater performer with extensive live performance credits.” This is well application essays followed by the standard film/TV resume. I’ve also seen kid’s resumes with a summary that say things like, “Misty began performing with the Dallas Ballet Theater at age 4, and manajemen earned rave reviews for her performance as Clara in the Fort Worth Ballet’s Nutcracker.” Or “In addition to the film and TV credits listed here, Darla has a range of theater, dance, and gymnastics credits available on request.” Best of luck to written college, you and your talented daughter!
Regards, Deb. How do you distinguish supporting lead from supporting featured? Number of lines? Scenes? The casting director or director determines which parts are ‘featured’, ‘supporting’, ‘extra’, or lead roles. Thesis Keuangan! It isn’t the number of well college essays lines — Jane Wyman won a Best Actress Oscar for peace short essay, “Johnnie Belinda” without uttering a single line. (She played a deaf mute.)
Kameron’s agent always tells us what his role is, and college since that deterines his salary as well, it’s something agents always pay attention to. One thing that surprised me is that the listings on IMDB aren’t done according to how important the role is — actors are listed by popularity (that is how many searches on IMDB have been done for their nae). Papers! So it’s possible for a lead actor to be listed on the online database much lower than a supporting actor who is more famous. When in doubt, ask your agent. If you don’t have an agent, ask the director. Just say, “I want to put this on my resume.
How should I list the well written college application part?” Most people are more than willing to help new actors by sharing information and help! This is a perfectly written article, very informative and helpful, thanks for sharing these acting resume writing tips. I have also read this Guide on Making a Professional Resume for on mind, additional information.

In Praise of well essays a Liberal Arts Education. War Research? Click image for full commencement remarks. And it’s why many schools are shaking up their curricula to ensure that undergraduate business majors receive something they may not even know they need—a rigorous liberal-arts education. On January 2, David fell down a full flight of stairs with the dog in his arms. Peace? It could have been far worse. But the broken rib made it impossible to sleep on either side, so he had been sleeping on his back all month. He complained that it had led to papers, a resurgence of his reflux.
So on the second day of my job my mom drove him to the doctor for an EKG, which was normal. Then his doctor decided to send him to get blood work done to measure his enzymes. A slight elevation in his troponin had our family doctor calling the ER and well college essays insisting that David head over there. We were understandably emotional–David's close call and war research papers a sense that fate had cast a beneficent wind to blow in our direction–instead of a massive heart attack with damage to his heart, he had a stent and great heart function. I have been through enough of these medical scenarios to know that there comes a time when the crisis is past, hospital care becomes a little routine again and well college application essays it's OK to let go of your vigilance–the procedure is over, we know what we're dealing with, the patient is settled down and needs rest and you need to take a shower.
I anticipated this would be the case that evening after the catheterization. though we didn't get great news, the medical professionals had a plan and a method that would help. War Research? But David didn't seem settled. A bout of nausea dogged him almost immediately after the procedure and wouldn't let up, even with anti-nausea medication. He grew more agitated and disoriented. But he didn't seem sleepy to essay on importance, me and shortly after that he tried to get out of essays bed. I went to essays on mind, help, was disconcerted by his response, Hold on, Ally! When the nurse finally came in, she saw that, too, and said, Is he always like this?
I said, No! That's exactly what I've been saying! She started a neurological test. I watched as he struggled to name the pictures, to find words, to speak coherently. From that moment the pace and tenor of the care we received accelerated dramatically. Vaguely I heard, Rapid Response, room 610.
I watched as the well college essays room filled with medical personnel, a sea of dark blue and white, machines rolled in, electrodes and needles, quiet discussion, sharp orders. As I stood in thesis, the corner I heard the word stroke and sank down in my seat. David's eyes met mine. I saw my own fear reflected in them and his own bewilderment. I stood up and went to the end of the bed, speaking softly while looking him in the eye, It's ok, they're here to college essays, help. You're going to be alright.
We'll take care of you. And then we were rushed into the CT scan, the doctor who admitted him the evening before arriving to be alarmed at essays on mind and body his state. I had called my parents on the way down and told them, they think he might be having a stroke. I can't do this by myself. My dad, whose daily routines include an early bedtime, told me he'd be right down. it was 10:30. When I approached the stretcher in the hallway I heard David murmuring, Megan, Ally, Beth; Megan, Ally, Beth. as if the names of the people he loved best were a totem, a blessing, a protective spell against whatever insidious creature had taken hold of his mind. The news from the CT scan was positive, no active bleeding, no stroke visible. But they didn't know what was causing Davids issues–which I now had a name for–verbal aphasia. The planned cardiac catheterization was still arranged and write an introduction argumentative research I was prepared to written, protest if they moved forward with the procedure before we understood the implications of the neurological event. Fortunately, we were given a reprieve. The neurologist and the cardiologist agreed. By 10 am David was rebounding, expressing himself well, even cracking jokes with the on mind and body medical staff. By the time Ally came with my parents to visit, he was mostly back to himself, though the dark cloud of the night before was a blooming bruise on his psyche. We each will carry that flashbulb memory of the dread on each other's face in those daunting first minutes.
As we spoke of it several days later, he told me he couldn't think in those early moments. He knew something was wrong, was trying to form his words, but couldn't make his brain work. As the college room became crowded with nurses and doctors, he looked around anxiously and identified my face as the one he knew. He didn't know who I was, but he recognized me. In the education moment our eyes locked, I knew his dismay. It is college, that moment we won't easily forget. We learned the next day that David had a mini stroke. the neurologist showed us the tiny pinprick on essay, the MRI that represented the well application dead synapses in David's brain. So what to do for written, the other two blockages? Written Application? I wrote about this experience in this post earlier. Again, we are in limbo, awaiting results of a planned stress test in a week. It will tell us how we proceed. Peace? But we know it will not ever be life as usual again, you can't re-cork the bottle.
In then meantime, we are surrounded by the love of friends and family whose care and concern sustain us. Our gratitude to the medical professionals who had a hand in his care is immeasurable–they were kind and gentle, immensely sympathetic and incredibly professional, answering our numerous questions with patience as we struggled to understand this event in our lives. Well College Application Essays? We are still stunned and processing this, but we keep coming back to essays on mind and body, this sense of gratitude. And a sense that when we chose each other, we chose wisely. We are reminded again of the value of essays a loving and supportive partner–how a crisis reminds us that what is really important is that we have each other. The day after David returned home from the hospital, I found this quote by Elizabeth Gilbert.
It exactly captures our awe at the generosity of so many people who have been supportive. Of Time Life? It turns out written application, this post is about gratitude. December 30, 2015. And to make and essays end is to make a beginning. The end is well written college essays, where we start from. #148; T.S. Elliot. Late December always brings a tendency toward reflection. The year is in frankenstein essays, nearly past, magazines and news shows are offering retrospectives, even social media gets into the game with year-end round ups. Well Written Application Essays? Some years are full of landmark moments–births and education essays weddings, new jobs and renovations. Other years just glance off your memory like shopping lists.
For the written application essays Careys 2015 was a year of proposal thesis manajemen keuangan endings and beginnings, it was a yin and yang of events. Happy milestones and challenging adversity. A balance of what was and what will be. December 22, 2015. On the drive to school today, Ally commented, “I wish I could go back to well written application essays, believing in Santa Claus, Christmas was so much fun then.” She still loves the holiday, but nothing compares to that sense of anticipation.
I told her it all comes back and is even better when you’re a parent. Which is true… Parenting provides some strange challenges. David and I were the worst tooth fairy ever. War Research? We routinely forgot (often several nights in a row). And Megan still talks about the morning she came in complaining that the tooth fairy didn’t come—again—and David went in written essays, and pretended to search in the pillows and dropped a coin. That’s when she figured it out. Education Essays? I can say with certainty that one thing David and I got right was Santa–we took Santa to a whole new level… Not only did Santa always eat the written college application essays cookies and drink the milk and war research papers the reindeer also ate the carrots and the oats, but they ALWAYS left a huge mess. Carrots and oats on the roof, muddy boot prints on the hearth, logs in the fireplace displaced, cookies left half-eaten with crumbs all over the coffee table.
David staged Christmas morning like he was a realtor trying to flip a property. So the girls believed and that was the magic—their faces on Christmas morning were precious and I still smile in memory of their reactions to their bounty. Both of them believed through elementary school, despite their friends’ loss of innocence. All I can say is thank god there were no elves on the shelves for them or we might have gone nuts. One night of these shenanigans is enough. Application Essays? So, in a spirit of sharing, here are David and Beth’s thoughts for keeping the heart of Santa alive. It worked for us.
Good luck with your own capers. 1. Santa has different wrapping paper for each child and different from the wrapping for all the other gifts. That way you avoid having to proposal, write a name in your own handwriting on a gift tag that would totally give you away. Of course, you then need to application, make sure that Santa’s paper is write argumentative, safely hidden from the kids (and your husband when he’s looking to wrap his gifts on Christmas morning…) And either use it all year after year or stash it away so that the kids don’t find it in July…good luck. 2. The gas fireplace needs to be turned off well before bedtime and don't even think about having a real fire on Christmas Eve.
Santa may be magical, but he’s not fireproof. 3. Bedtime is strictly enforced on written college application essays, Christmas Eve (this was a fairly easy to peace short, accomplish—the sooner they got to well application essays, bed the in frankenstein essays sooner the big man could come and make his deliveries). 4. Well? Be sure you have your extension ladder available…you’ll understand why. 5. Have a boot and some water handy. Education? 6. Food for Santa is left on the table and must be eaten or returned to well written application essays, the cookie jar. For this reason Santa should not get “special” cookies unless you plan on eating them—kids are smart enough to recognize the thesis manajemen cookie that they carefully decorated for SC when you’re eating it Christmas day for desert. “Hey, that looks like the cookie I set out for well college, Santa…” 7. The reindeer get oats and carrots.
That’s it. Proposal Manajemen Keuangan? None of that sparkle stuff that kids bring home from the school party. Well College? Sparkles are not good for reindeer (or the rug). Carrots need to be chewed a little but oats can be returned to the can after you’ve scattered a few for in student life, effect on the ROOF. Yes this is where the well college application essays ladder comes in—at 2 AM you need to thesis manajemen keuangan, climb onto your roof (preferably in your slippers) to scatter oats and carrots. Well College Application Essays? Because the reindeer don't come inside, but they really need their snack… 8. Presents must be artfully arranged and war research stockings carefully stuffed. The dog should be in bed with the kids because he REALLY likes wrapping paper. 9. Create some mud with the water and dirt from your garden. Written College Application Essays? Put the boot in it a leave a muddy print on the hearth. It doesn’t matter that it hasn't rained in weeks and that the ground is frozen solid. 10.
While one of you is gallivanting on the roof, the other should be carefully drafting a letter from essays Santa that highlights the kids’ accomplishments and lets them know they were good…then you need to copy it in red or green pen in written application, indistinguishable handwriting (this is often where the how to an introduction argumentative research spirit of well application essays joy wears thin, because Santa’s handwriting starts to peace short, look like Daddy’s…and it’s nearly 2 AM) 11. Be sure that you have cameras ready, Christmas music in the CD player, and well application coffee set up before you head up to bed. 12. Essay? David’s family had a tradition of having Santa put a ribbon across the stairs so that no one goes down before mom and dad are up (after three hours’ sleep). This is the well essays last thing to do before you crawl into peace short bed, because if the kids wake up and there’s a ribbon across the stairs then they know Santa was here already.
DO NOT GET CAUGHT AT THIS POINT or all will be for nothing. 13. Go to well essays, bed. Wake up 15 minutes later on of time management, Christmas morning. Enjoy the delight of your children. 14. College? Before any child can go downstairs, an manajemen keuangan, adult HAS go down and push the button to get the coffee brewing—don’t miss this step. We still put the ribbon up, we are still up late, but now we don’t live in fear of ruining the girls’ childhood fantasies.
It’s still a joy to come down on written essays, Christmas morning, to bake coffee cake and drink coffee, to war research, give and receive gifts with special meaning, and to know that each Christmas creates its own gift of well written application essays memory. Thesis Manajemen Keuangan? Belief is at the heart of all of these things. whether you put your faith in a higher power or nature or the good will of those around you, this is a time of year when many people reveal their better selves through gifts of well college application essays time and energy, thought and deed. It is at the heart of what this season represents, faith in peace, things unseen, belief that better times will come. December 1, 2015. Sometimes the season’s change feels imperceptible, until you realize that it is suddenly here.
It is that moment when you look out the window and see green buds on well college, the trees where there were only bare branches or a carpet of fallen leaves where there once was grass. It happens for of time management life, me each year as we move from autumn into winter and I see the goldfinches in the backyard displaced by juncos. I love the late summer antics of the goldfinches—their erratic flight through the garden, perching on the spent remains of our coneflower and black-eyed susans, their sudden burst of flight as I enter the back gate, a flash of bright yellow against the dark greens and well college application essays russets of our September garden. Then, at some point in late October I recognize a change in the music of the garden, look out the window and see not yellow, but grey–the juncos have taken over write for an the yard. These little birds are the well college tenacious harbingers of winter. Their rugged nature keeps them in my yard all winter, roosting in the rhododendron, puffed up against on mind and body the cold. They seem to written, survive through an act of will and instinct and brighten our winter days with their jaunty faces. There are other winter birds—the flashy cardinal, the noisy chickadee, solitary nuthatches—but like the goldfinches in the summer, the juncos are my favorite winter bird.
Goldfinches are summer’s bright exclamation marks, juncos are winter’s grey period. I admire them for their hardy resilience, their pleasant appearance, their steadfastness. I guess that vitality and essay on importance of time life perseverance are innate to these birds and that’s what I admire in them. I’ve written much this year about well college application essays, hardship, overcoming it, facing it. It has been a tough year, no doubt about it. Especially for education, Ally, who has been directly burdened with much of our misfortune—pneumonia in February, hair loss in April (from the stress of the pneumonia), concussion from the accident in written essays, July and the subsequent loss of her field hockey season to that injury, and the sudden, heartbreaking death of a classmate and friend from her nursery-school days in November. What a year…
And yet she remains optimistic, well-balanced, good-humored. Essays On Mind And Body? Her resilience in college application, the face of all of this reminds me of on importance management my favorite juncos. As we move through fall and into winter, she is in high anticipation of her favorite holiday. If we allowed it, Ally would play Christmas music year-round. She knows all of the tunes—modern renditions, traditional carols, and vintage standards—she loves them, sings them, infects all of written application essays us with her spirit and enjoyment. Papers? Her enthusiasm is indicative of her nature, her charm. Though she is concerned with issues of well college essays justice and proposal thesis keuangan integrity, she is well written college essays, wickedly funny and droll—poking fun at herself as much as the rest of on importance of time management in student life us.
Though she is often anxious, she is the written college first to remark on our considerable good fortune, often admonishing us, “choose your attitude.” A good friend, sister, cousin, daughter who doesn’t shy away from telling the truth, but always offers support and loyalty—a trusted confidant, thoughtful and caring. She smiled and joked through hospitalization and hair loss and concussion, graciously thanking the many people along the way who made her troubles a little easier. Write An Introduction? Just as the juncos, I think it is her nature to be cheerful and resilient. How lucky for her and for well written, us? As for the coming holiday, Ally enjoys the anticipation as much as anything, so my wish for her is proposal thesis manajemen keuangan, a long countdown filled with all of her favorite songs.
October 29, 2015. The best part about my walk is written college application, getting out into the world and witnessing all this beauty. I am even more fortunate in having a walking partner who values the scenery and waits patiently while I take out my iPhone for these photos. This always serves as a reminder that sometimes it really is all about the view along the way and not the destination. Walking this same route through the seasons reminds me that there are small gifts waiting every day—the dew-filled grass, a frost covered flower, a hawk flying overhead, a patchwork of leaves at manajemen my feet. Today was no exception—there is beauty all around us, pause and take in the view. College? September 29, 2015. September is Suicide Prevention Month.
I know this because I've seen it posted on several friends' Facebook pages. It's likely your family has been touched by this insidious killer–it's the 10th leading cause of death in write an introduction for an argumentative research paper, the U.S.–I know mine has. Stigma keeps many people from talking about it, but it is past time we stopped avoiding uncomfortable conversations which could offer support and solace to families and to their loved ones dealing with depression, anxiety, and college essays other forms of argumentative research paper mental illness. Nearly 15 years ago we lost my sister-in-law, Christine. A caring and college generous soul, Chris made her living as a geriatric nurse, working with patients with Alzheimer's and dementia. She was kind, thoughtful, empathetic soul and loved her family, especially David, with great fervor. She traveled the in frankenstein essays world, often on college essays, her own, observing places with her own unique eye.
She returned from those trips to Portugal or Belize or New Orleans with memories and photos and artwork, filling her home with the on mind souvenirs from these trips. She was smart, confident, and strong. Until she wasn't. We'll never know for sure what happened, but three years before she took her life, something changed dramatically and Chris became paranoid and frightened, developing irrational and impossible fears. David spent a great deal of written college time with her, convincing her that these fears were not real, coaching her, restoring her to her former self-assurance, only to find to she had regressed the next week or day. We sought medical help, support from proposal family and friends, read articles and written books, but nothing provided the relief she sought. She was hospitalized several times, provided therapy and pharmaceuticals, but her fears, anxiety, and paranoia lead to a deep and intractable depression. Still she had moments–she loved our girls and manajemen enjoyed time with them, allowing Megan to dump the contents of written college application essays her purse and war research papers explore them, holding baby Ally in her arms, joining us for quiet dinners and family celebrations. College? And opening her home to us, inviting the girls into how to for an research paper her quiet back yard to explore and play. It was clear that she knew she was loved and that she truly loved us. But something was broken and she couldn't see a future where it was repaired.
For months leading up to her death we were visited by an ominous premonition that had us lying awake at night, concerned for her life. On a cold night in well application, early November David drove the mile and a half to essay on importance in student, Chris' home to check on her–it was a Monday night and we hadn't heard from her all weekend. I asked him to call if he was going to college essays, stay as he often spent hours with her bolstering her mood. Nothing prepared me for the raw, violent pain in his voice over of time the phone, She's dead, oh God, she's dead. College Application Essays? And then we were survivors. for David, again. His family has been scarred by suicide four times. And Body? aunt, cousin, mother, now sister. If there are miracles in this world, one is that this man has created a happy life out of the well written wreckage wrought by others. Chris' death was no different. In its wake he lost the short essay company and care of well application his remaining siblings–it's hard to define why, but a family fraught with mental illness creates its own defenses and survivors find their own way through the darkness. There are always questions, there are rarely answers.
A friend recently spoke about her own dark time with anxiety, telling me she no longer saw suicide as a selfish act, that in the throes of a deep depression you could not see another way out. I don't know what momentary or menacing process lead Chris to take her life, or what would have kept her from doing so–that is the how to an introduction paper biggest challenge to friends and family. what could we have done? I do know that limiting health care benefits exacerbates an already challenging circumstance. In an well college essays, age when we still know so very little about how our brains operate, it is confounding that insurance companies can still limit access to papers, good therapies that work, given time. And often, that is what ultimately offers solace and cure–time, patience, acceptance. So suicide prevention is really about better mental health care. But is is also speaking openly about the wreckage that comes in well college application, the wake of suicide–scars and questions, blame and abandonment. These are hard conversations to proposal manajemen, have, but an important part of prevention and critical to well written, healing for survivors. It is a long road to forgiveness, finding mercy and absolution for ourselves and Chris.
The knowledge that we did what we could and essay management life were there for her, listening and supporting, helps. As is our certainty in college application, her love for our family. Though I do believe rationally that suicide is war research papers, preventable, I worry about the message we send to written essays, families of victims when we make that statement. We still question, could we have done more? If we had called on Friday or Saturday, would she still be with us? Suicide attempts, while not purely an peace short essay, impulse, are transient. One out of well written college application every twenty-five attempts are successful, so it can be an issue of timing. Essays? We will never know.
And we remain immutably transformed by her loss. and I remember another day. not quite a year earlier. Application? It is how I track time. A day the world took notice, and the day 10 months earlier when our private universe collapsed. They are linked for me, a way of marking anniversaries, how long has it been? 15 years nearly. years filled with unattended birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, a hundred missed celebrations. more marking of time.
I see you, head bent over a baby, a child (not your own, but so adored) I catch glimpses, there you are in the supermarket or walking on the street or sitting on that bench. moments glance off my memory, your voice, a slight smile, my ears strain to hear your laugh. anxious for that sweet melody, crowded out by pain, uncertainty. I cannot hear it, though I know it, imagine it, your voice is silent. You are not here. Too soon to see that baby grown tall and elegant, to see that child strike off on her own. Essays? Your choice and written college essays yet somehow not. Manajemen Keuangan? Forgiveness is absolution, pain has a short reach but a long memory. Regret and gratitude walk hand in hand.
Though you are not here, you are present. Your spirit in the home you made for us. It is written essays, not enough. How To An Introduction For An Research? #148; I have been considering the nature of luck lately. Well Written College Essays? By many measures, the Carey family has hit a run of bad luck in 2015—Ally was hospitalized with pneumonia and complications twice, our elderly cars are feeling their mortality, I lost my job in on importance of time management in student life, February, and last week the Subaru was dealt a fatal blow when it was rear-ended, sending Ally to the doctor with a concussion. We've faced numerous setbacks and difficulties, but the first six months of 2015 have presented unusual challenges. Well Essays? So, I've been thinking about good fortune, the caprice of the essays on mind universe, serendipity. I wouldn't say that I'm particularly superstitious, but I do have a few quirks.
One of them is lucky pennies. I can't resist picking up a copper on the sidewalk or street—shiny or dull, heads up or down. I love the feeling that somehow fate is written application, smiling down on me—that singular moment of gratification when I discover a coin and pocket it. It lightens my mood and my outlook for the day, regardless of whether the notion of luck holds true, it is still found money, though tiny increments. Those increments add up over time—we have a container full of found coins (mostly pennies) from the last 5 years—it is essay, nearly full, heavy with promise and fortune. A lucky find amortized over the years. A small offering in the vast expanse of the universe. Much of nature tends toward balance and symmetry—from butterflies to college application, snowflakes, spiderwebs to galaxies, the universe seems to favor order over chaos. Those who believe in karma would speculate over our past actions, karma being a law of moral causation, what might we have done to be faced with our state? I choose to believe that our current run of luck is nature’s method of ensuring our growth and development, a nudge in the direction of our future prosperity and happiness.
This natural alignment leads me back to our string of bad luck—and wondering if luck is really just how you perceive your current circumstances—an exercise in practicing affirmation for what we have, measuring our situation with a hopeful attitude. It’s not always easy, but I daily remind myself of our good fortune in education in frankenstein essays, supportive and generous family and friends who have offered us encouragement and endorsement, assurance and blessing. So I attempt to view this in a positive light. I lost a job that had no long-term future, that, after nearly 10 years offered little by way of personal and professional growth. Not having a job over the past few months has offered opportunities that I wouldn’t otherwise enjoy—rare days with my family, attending all of the events that were the last hurrah of Megan’s senior year, time spent on long walks with friends without concern for being elsewhere. One forgets the boon of free time in the chaos of work obligations. Well Written Essays? Losing my job allowed me to spend a full two weeks with my parents, siblings, and our children in thesis keuangan, Avalon, NJ—a yearly gathering that I have squeezed into weekends for the past ten years—I cannot place a value on the time spent under one roof again enjoying the company of the people I love the best. Change comes daily—slowly or suddenly—all we can do is respond to it with our best efforts, understanding that, as John Lennon wrote, “Life is written application essays, what happens when you’re busy making plans.” And yes, though the world loves symmetry, it devolves into chaos pretty regularly—the regular intervals of ocean waves break on the shore to the circulating grains of sand, the Fibonacci sphere of a dandelion casts its seeds to write for an argumentative research, the wind, the dramatic circulation of a tornado leads to devastation.
Chance, luck, fortune—whatever you wish to call it—comes in waves, less regularly than the ocean and without its constance. Written College Essays? It’s a good exercise to acknowledge both our impotence in controlling events and education essays our attitude in how they shape us. When Louis Pasteur wrote, “Chance favors the prepared mind,” he was speaking of scientific observation, but I have always felt that he believed that luck is well written application essays, partly attitude. If fate is a whimsy of the thesis keuangan cosmos, good luck lies mostly in our perspective and openness to change. I choose to written essays, view this year’s luck as a reminder that fate has mostly cast its favor on the Carey family and to try practice gratitude for our blessings. I am not always successful, but I shall keep trying. Education In Frankenstein Essays? And I’ll keep picking up those pennies. I am privileged to share my life with two exceptional fathers—one who raised me and one who is helping me raise our children. Well Application? They are very different parents, but their parenting is founded in keuangan, unconditional love. David chose to well written college, stay home with our girls—it is essay in student life, one of the most consequential decisions we've ever made. It defined the quality of our daughters' childhood, and continues to shape them in ways that are beyond our comprehension.
For David, fatherhood is well application, a full contact experience—he took it on with his typical energetic enthusiasm. I love being a mother, but David thrives on fatherhood—it is his defining achievement and his most proud accomplishment. 18 years ago, stay at home dads were not nearly as prevalent as they are today and he faced confusion and misjudgment on proposal manajemen keuangan, occasion, often having to explain himself. No, he wasn't taking the day off to be with his kids; no, he wasn't unemployed, this was his job; etc. And he routinely reported a level of prejudice as he took the girls out—a disconcerting wariness amongst the well application (mostly) women he encountered at playgrounds and parks. He took this all in stride and created a magical (albeit unusual) childhood experience for our girls.
A typical week would take them to the zoo or museums or one the many local playgrounds. Or to essay of time management in student, more unusual spots. A favorite outing included watching the planes land at the Philadelphia airport, enjoying the well written college application essays thrill as 747s bore down on them, just above the treetops, the compressed air from the engines swirling the leaves of the trees. It's a breathtaking experience to stand under a plane as it powers overhead—one that the on mind and body girls still love. College? David loves a good game and his joy in play was evident to the girls—he was Megan’s first playmate, Ally’s favorite buddy—a constant source of fun and in frankenstein laughter as they were little, a cause of smiles and well application eye-rolling as they got older, but always delighted to papers, participate.
He is a pied piper in a room full of kids—they seem to know that he is the source of the fun. His made-up games were simple in execution, complex in imagination, and provided hours of well essays amusement. He was always creating opportunities for them, from digging holes at the beach to papers, creating snow mountains in our yard for them to sled down to well written college, building bonfires on the rocky coast. And he was far more lenient with them than I would have been— allowing the war research girls to well application, play in puddles and mud, to throw the folded laundry around and jump on the sofa, to create strange concoctions out of flour and cereal and dried pasta and water, to paint on the kitchen floor. And he acquiesced to them bringing home all kinds of creatures—from tadpoles to parakeets—we have had more pets than I would ever have allowed: 3 hamsters, 3 parakeets, 5 hermit crabs, 7 guppies (one who lived nearly 6 years), a bunny and, of course, our beloved Schoodic the Dog. This doesn't include the of time management in student fish and tadpoles in the garden pond. Application? From those pets they learned about life and essay loss, a little bit of responsibility, the virtue of taking care of something helpless, the joy and sweetness of unconditional love.
From their dad they learned the power of showing up and participating, the joy of a simple walk in the woods, to savor play and fun. They learned to create art and music. They both understand the value of hard work and a good deal. He taught them to listen to soundtracks—both the natural soundtrack around us and written college application essays the ones in the movies. He cultivated in them an appreciation of photography, both as artwork and manajemen keuangan as an expression of love—their favorite childhood moments are captured on film, for even as he was engaged with them, he was recording every minute, both in stills and on video, creating enduring gifts to his family. A treasure of sharing and absolute love. I don’t know how these things will continue to shape the girls. As they’ve gotten older, they tend to turn to well application, me more—a natural progression, I think. I know David sometimes feels irrelevant, maybe that feeling’s natural, too.
But I know it’s not true. I see daily his influence on them and I know how his guidance has shaped them into strong, smart, savvy, talented, caring young women who love music and photographs, the rocky Maine coast, and the way the light plays across the water. I know they are passionately sentimental and will bear those memories into for an whatever future they make for themselves. And, though they love and appreciate him now, I know that only when they become parents will they fully realize how very lucky they are. I remember a trip I took with my dad. It was our last summer in Vermont and well written college my mom was retiring from directing the Merestead Field Hockey and Lacrosse Camp. I was a junior in high school and my dad and I spent the day in rare accord. Motivated to make the manajemen most of our last day off, he was inspired to revisit our previous camp locations—Camp Songadeewin in Barton, VT and Camp Dunmore in well application essays, Salisbury, VT—all in of time management life, one day. I went along for the ride. We departed at the crack of dawn, heading up to Lake Willoughby and memories of Fox Hall, granite outcroppings, cold crystal-clear lake water, rides with Uncle Lenny in the trash truck, the red barn, Mt.
Piscah—all of my favorite childhood memories in one spot. Well Written? I remember this place viscerally, with every cell in my being. I can recall the smell of pine in essays, the woods, the scent of the written hot granite after a summer shower, the cool, cool feel of the lake, the shape of the downhill curve in short, the road that took us to the beach and written college application essays the wide open vista framed by the two mountains there. I can feel the draw of essays gravity down that hill to the beach, the slapping of my sneaker-clad feet against the asphalt, have the view tattooed into well written application essays my consciousness, and would recognize the shape of those mountains anywhere. On Importance In Student Life? Dad and I wandered around the camp, boarded up and vacant, but still pulsing with the heartbeat of so many memories, vivid in our minds. Written College Application? We didn’t talk much, but explored separately, each of us reveling in our own remembrances. Education Essays? We took a few pictures, spoke with the camp’s owner, stopped at the foot of the hill to take in that awsome view, recalled the well written story of my friend Heather’s falling out of the how to write for an paper car at the turn in the road, along with her blistering anger at being tossed—she was fine, even her orange Fanta survived the fall… We drove along back roads across the well written state to thesis keuangan, Camp Dunmore where I explored memories of camp pranks, thunderstorms that swept across the lake, dropping an unbaited hook off the dock and catching and releasing what seemed like hundreds of sunfish (my mom questioned whether maybe it was just the essays same one with a very sore lip), visits to the fish hatchery, to AW and Calvi’s for ice cream in Middlebury. This is where I discovered of my own athleticism; learned the skills of cradling and dribbling, catching, throwing, and hitting; started to papers, appreciate the value of teamwork and coaching. It is where I lay on a cot listening to the radio with other teenagers—tunes that still recall that time to me and often draw me back to that place.
As we drove back to Castleton, we stopped in a country store and in a generous gesture, Dad bought me a small painted wooden box that I admired. Written Application? I still have that box. I value it as a simple token, but also as a powerful reminder of a day with my dad—a unique and peace short harmonious day in our tumultuous relationship. We spent 7 hours in written college application, the car that day, drove over 300 miles, on one tank in his diesel VW Rabbit, spoke sparingly—caught in essay of time management life, our separate memories of written college a state we both love. 35 years later, we both remember the day for its audacity and for its peace—a long drive and a short detente during my provoking teenaged years. I loved this day for the rare shared experience, but I love it more in retrospect for the powerful memory that it holds, for the affinity I still feel with my dad because of how to write for an argumentative research paper it; for application, the tenacity and yearning of that memory, wrapped in the sight and smell and taste of places we loved, shared with a person I love. If high school was a concerto, I imagine senior year would be scored allegro vivo or even allegro agitato . Picking up on a powerful melody developed during junior year it is a fast-paced whirlwind—a modern composition full of discord and flourishes in a minor key that ultimately resolves into a beautiful and melancholic largo . Such has been our year. Essays? The stresses of academic performance, participation in college essays, numerous activities, testing, researching, applying—finally—the disappointments and successes, the anxiety of waiting, and the triumph of a decision, leading to a final resolution and a little sense of calm (before the storm of write argumentative research heading off to college.) It’s never easy to well, witness your child under stress, nor is it easy to be the parent who pushes. In this blog entry on the college application process, Pete Van Buskirk writes: “…it isn’t easy to give up control and expect an 18-year-old, with little-to-no experience, to thesis manajemen, make the right decisions in managing a process of this complexity when the stakes are so high…As a parent, you have done your job in college, that you have brought her to the point where she can begin speaking for herself. Now, it’s her turn.” Powerful in theory, sometimes not as smooth in practice as it’s incredibly hard to not manage or even micro-manage this process. In retrospect, I would have relaxed a little more during the application process…hindsight always offers clarity.
In any case, we are facing the final few weeks with the knowledge that she is going to a school that she chose for all of the reasons she thought were important. Peace Short? And we hope…. We hope that she takes this phenomenal opportunity and her unique talents and reaps a fabulous harvest from the seeds that we’ve sown together over the years. That she meets people whose companionship and well written college friendship will take her through the experience and beyond and that, in 30 years’ time, she still turns to those people in times of joy and sadness. That she grows into peace herself, continuing to mature as the confident, smart, talented, happy child she was into the remarkable young woman we see emerging. Essays? That she risks new experiences. That she grows in worldliness and sophistication, but never loses her appreciation for simple things like a walk on peace, the beach, a quiet rainy morning, the companionship of a good friend.
That she discovers something which she is passionate about, moving her to cultivate and nurture that passion. That she is fulfilled. And happy. Written Application? And safe. This has been a year of endings—a final soccer game, a last concert, prom, awards banquets—all leading to graduation. But it is a launching also, an peace short, opportunity to review and appreciate what was accomplished and to discard the trivial and cherish the best and move on to a future that promises wonderment and vitality, growth and adventure. And as we listen to the score for this year, our hearts swell and our eyes fill, bereft at the thought of her absence, proud in written application essays, her accomplishments, overjoyed in her possibilities. The music slows to essays on mind, that largo and we revel in well written college, our gratitude. *Italian music terms: allegro vivo—fast, lively. allegro agitato—fast, agitated; restless. largo—rather slow; stately. I recently read this piece online extolling the education in frankenstein virtues of long walks and chronicling the variety of application essays smart people who use walking as a means to channel their creativity—it cites the likes of Steve Jobs, Beethoven, Goethe, and Charles Dickens. And, of course, Thoreau took walking to a whole new realm.
As exercise, I can attest what walking lacks in sweat equity, it makes up for in cerebral agility. Most of my creative writing germinates during my solo walks, an opportunity to turn things over in my mind. Essays? There is also the therapeutic effect of written college application walking with a friend. I find such an enormous benefit as I go though my own angst-ridden days, in sharing some of that burden with another person, especially someone who isn’t intimately involved with the main characters. A walking conversation has the same benefit that talking to my kids in the car does—you know, those intimate conversations that don’t take place face to face at the dinner table because everyone’s watching you. My walking talks with friends range from raising our young adults and teens to finding fulfilling work to caring for aging parents and spouses to discussing and diagnosing our weird ailments (which all fall into the category of menopause) to worrying about relationships with our kids, our husbands, our siblings, our parents to griping about peace, our jobs and bosses, our thickening waistlines, the increasing difficulty in finding really good fitting bras/shoes/jeans. It’s eclectic and mundane and ever so helpful in maintaining a balance. Written Application? There is a powerful comfort in how to write research, knowing that I’m not alone in this journey, that I have friends who are travelling the same path. Written College Application Essays? These discussions provide moments of education in frankenstein communion. They are revealing and expressive, honest and forthright—a sharing of experience and empathy. I’m lucky to well written, have friends far and in frankenstein essays near with whom the camaraderie of a shared walk is integral to our relationship.
I enjoy walking with these women for the perspective on life they can bring to our talks. Our walks provide an exceptional time for undistracted conversation. I have traveled with friends through our shared experiences with job searches, family illness, depression, anxiety, and hope. For there is always the promise of tomorrow’s walk to get us out of bed the next morning. Well Written Application Essays? And yet it is war research, my solo walks that offer me equilibrium, that give me the time and space to contemplate. No fancy equipment required—all I need is a pair of well college essays sneakers and stretch of road and I’m on war research, my way. My friend Bonnie once told me that women at a certain age experience a compelling desire to be grounded and that walking is the ideal exercise for that, feet striking the pavement, one foot in application, front of the other—a no-nonsense undertaking. For me, it is both ballast and sail. A time for problem-solving and fancy-flight alike…an unfettered stream of consciousness birthing poetry and stories and shopping lists. It brings clarity to my often-tangled thoughts, providing an hour’s worth of straightforward movement in my chronically chaotic life. “An early morning walk is peace essay, a blessing for the whole day.” — Henry David Thoreau. Friends know I like to tell that story of my mom's forgetting to pick me up after choir practice at written college application the church when I was a kid.
It wasn't a random forgetful moment, but a regular occurrence that eventually turned into a ritual of my getting rides home with the choir director, arriving just as dinner was being placed on essays and body, the table and my mom's Oh, Beth, when did you get home? To which I disdainfully replied, It's Thursday. you forgot me at choir. again. I recalled this experience to a dear friend and colleague, Dottie, who knew my mom professionally, to which she replied, I'm sure that never happened, your mom is so organized! Which is true. at the time we were speaking, she was teaching a time management course to the undergraduate students at college application Bryn Mawr College. I smiled at my friend as we waited for mom to pick me up after work (we both worked at Bryn Mawr and car-pooled.) After about 15 minutes, I turned to Dottie and said, I bet she forgot me.
She replied, She'd never forget you. She just got held up. Several minutes later Mom arrived and Dottie related my comment. Mom's reply? I got almost to Rosemont before I remembered her! It's a story of being a third child.
By the education in frankenstein essays time my parents had me they were parenting alumni, what I brought in well, challenges, they seemed to overcome with experience and a typically 1970s laissez faire parenting style that would dismay my own children. Essay On Importance Of Time In Student Life? For example, by well written application essays, the time I was in high school the in frankenstein rule was you miss the bus, you get yourself to school—walk, ride a bike, take the train—they'd write a note, but wouldn't provide transportation. I learned my senior year how quickly damp hair freezes in cold weather when you run for the bus. College Application Essays? My girls would be appalled. And yet, in peace, these cases, I never felt neglected, unloved, or dismissed. Nor did I truly ever appreciate my mother, having only well written college application, recently come to a point in my life where I am in utter amazement at all that she did. At a time when many of my friends' moms were homemakers, Mom worked part-time as a physical educator at Immaculata College, co-owned and directed several field hockey and lacrosse camps, served as chair of the township Park and Rec Board, sang in the church choir, had an active social life playing tennis and essays skiing with friends, AND had a home cooked meal on the table every night.
E-V-E-R-Y night. Then she cleaned up after dinner, typed my last minute papers for school, and relaxed in written college, front of the TV, setting her hair to Johnny Carson. In Student? The dinner on well written college application essays, the table every night has me in awe as the write an introduction for an research paper Carey family routinely has dinner on your own or make do meals, sometimes out of necessity of timing, many times out of sheer fatigue. And that big mahogany dinner table literally expanded as needed. Besides the five Shillingfords, we were joined daily by my grandmother and Uncle Willie, who both lived with us. Well Essays? And myriad others dropped in—neighborhood kids and friends who happened to be there at serving time, an occasional colleague or student of Mom's.
But there in the center of it all was Mom—svelte and poised, always ready to make an eloquent speech or to offer advice, be a friend or a mother, whatever was needed in the moment. She's still there, now chief champion and defender of the clan, with my dad, attending every concert, award ceremony, performance, meet, or game for her grandchildren and still mothering the three of us through our various struggles and cheering on our triumphs. Parenting doesn't shape children in the way any parent expects it to—children are shaped incrementally by breaths and education in frankenstein moments crystallized in time and tattooed on their psyche. I don't know if my mother forgot me at choir because I was an independent child, whom she could confidently assume would find her way home or if I became an independent woman because my mother allowed me to find my own way. College Application? It doesn't matter. I am ever grateful for the lesson. And my knowledge of her belief in me. Life has so many seasonal rituals, times when you know where you should be and what you should be doing–buying school supplies at the end of August, carving pumpkins in October–they become ingrained in your psyche.
There are other, more personal rituals. I never enter autumn without missing the heft and weight of a field hockey stick in essay, my hands and the smell of linseed oil in well written college application, my nose. Late June for how to write argumentative, me means camp. I was a camp counselor during my summers in college and in that brief time I was stamped with a love of musty cabins, pine scented woods, sweet tasting lake water, and the most stunningly blue sky you can imagine. I have never gotten over it, I pine for it mid-June when I should be driving north to Vermont to partake in the ritual of pre-camp–a week of well written college essays daily physical labor and evening gatherings. I still cannot imagine a better job, even though I earned a total of $400 dollars that summer for 9 weeks of papers work.
I loved being in familiar surroundings, in a state that I loved, on a lake at the base of a mountain in the summer. I know that there were things about it that I disliked–the food was marginal and the shower house was a strange, mildewy place infested with all kinds of creepy crawlies. Application Essays? But still, add to education essays, the stunning scenery and well college essays pure physical beauty of the place the education sweet decadence of application essays summer love and there is nothing to essays on mind, compare. It wasn't work–it was. camp. I was never a camper–was not one of those children who spent 4 or 8 weeks of the summer away from home, only to come back 3 inches taller and independent with friends and experiences beyond the confines of my hometown. Yet I knew during my freshman year in college that I wanted to be a camp counselor.
I inquired of a family friend who owned a camp whether she knew how I might get a job as a counselor and written application essays she hired me right then on the phone. Job accepted I headed north for what I will always consider one of the write research most transformational summers of my life. Camp is the reason I still make the trip north every summer–to lakes and well written college application essays rocky Maine beaches. It is the reason I feel compelled to how to for an argumentative paper, give my girls the sensual experience of sliding into well a summer lake, of education essays dangling their feet off of well a dock while the fish nibble at their toes, of sitting by a campfire while the night sky offers up a concert of how to for an research meteors, of climbing to the top of a mountain on a clear day to view the patchwork of scenery below. It is the reason I look for more miracles in nature than in well college application, church and the reason I relish in those simple beauties. Management Life? You see it latched onto me, camp did.
It was achingly beautiful on college, a summer morning to come out of my bunk and see the mist rising off the proposal manajemen keuangan lake, the well application dew still on the grass, girls holding my hand on the way to breakfast. Children being tucked in at manajemen keuangan night and telling me they loved me–the adoring worship a 12-year-old girl has for her 18-year-old counselor. Camp for me that summer was love–the love of kids, the well written application essays delicious love of a handsome boy, and for an research paper an overwhelming love of a place I had known since childhood. It was like coming home, finding the place that fit and never wanting to leave. I did leave and returned only one more summer, but I have never stopped searching for a substitute–how do you make a real living as a camp counselor? How do you capture the essence of camp–that carefree, transient joy of pure play and fun?
Or the silliness of camp pranks? Or the unfettered freedom of being on your own? Or the sublime anticipation of meeting a boy and well college application essays lying under the an introduction argumentative research paper stars? Or the sweet melancholy of a dying campfire? Or the awesome beauty of the Milky Way laid out well college essays, above you on a crystal clear night? I often find myself trying to capture the essence of that summer.
I sign up to join the three-day elementary school trip to camp or volunteer as a girl-scout leader. Short? There are moments of joy, but there is well college application, a difference. Nothing comes close to being 18, in education essays, love–with a place, and a boy, and an experience–it has a life of its own, an existence all to itself and it lives on in brief sparks of remembrance. It lives on in the smell of the pine woods, the taste of a spring-fed lake, the well college application essays lingering warmth of a dock after the sun has set, or the smoky tang of a campfire. And I am transported back in time. On August 5, I was diagnosed with a small aneurysm in my left carotid artery, which my primary care physician dismissed initially, but sent me to a neurologist, which lead to a neurosurgeon, which lead to discussions of the location of the proposal thesis manajemen keuangan aneurysm (inside or outside the brain), required me to detail a long family history of college application essays aneurysm, and lead me to trying not to freak out over proposal the remote possibility of brain surgery. ultimately leading to an angiogram last week that revealed that the well written college aneurysm was nothing more than a misshapen artery. A happy ending after weeks of anxiety. I have been spending a good deal of time and effort lately trying to live in the moment. an exercise in trying not to worry about the future before I have all the information needed to make decisions. It is short essay, amazingly hard to do, especially when parenting teenagers—even though they live remarkably well in the present—their very existence is well college application essays, forward-directed. there is essays, nothing but time ahead of them and well application essays as a parent, I am constantly thinking about war research papers, who they are, who they will become, how can I help them get there? So this exercise in well college, existential living has given me a glimpse back to peace, a time when I was able to well written essays, lay my head on the pillow at war research papers night with the comfort of a home and family, food that I didn't have to cook, the anticipation of college application time spent with friends, thinking barely further than the essays on mind and body next day's events.
I lost the ability to live in the moment as I became a responsible adult. it's a somewhat necessary loss—jobs, bills, managing family and work, providing the future for my children that will allow them to fulfill their dreams—all requires planning, thinking about well written college essays, goals, money, schools, classes, homework. And helping them develop their interests through sports or music or art contributes to the complexity of planning. So, it's no wonder that it gets harder to be in the moment—even if I can manage it briefly, life comes back at me with more--just more. More obligations, events, details to take care of, doctor appointments and tests to short essay, schedule, teachers to well college application essays, meet, deadlines to proposal manajemen, make, and those ever-present money details—forward thinking in themselves—saving for college, retirement, next year's vacation. And yet, I have come to believe that the most valuable currency we have is time, it comes to us in written application essays, a limited quantity and we can never make gains on it, we can only spend it.
So the challenge is how to spend it well. So what is time well-spent? Standing on the sidelines watching my child excel in a sport she loves so much she laughs and smiles while playing—feeling proud and happy and education essays successful that she has found such joy in sport; listening to my daughter sing while she does her homework, chores, showers, pretty much anything—thrilled to know that no matter what life throws at her, she has developed a coping mechanism that will assist her in dealing its those struggles; sitting next to my husband in a hospital knowing there is no one I would rather have with me at that moment—whether I get good news or bad; hearing the written college concern and love in a friend's voice—acknowledging that there are people in the world who want the education in frankenstein best for me. Being tuned in to application, the world—able to recognize the beauty in moments—geese flying overhead, v-ing across the sky, the russets and oranges of fall leaves crunching while I walk, the warmth of a dog's head on essay on importance of time management in student life, my feet as I work, an amazement of stars overhead, an abundance of blooms in my garden. This attempt at living in the moment, while difficult at well written essays times, has proven to be a good reminder of all the essay on importance life instances that I typically pass through on a given day without remark. a welcome demonstration of all the wonders that are the sum of my own happiness, if only I take the moment to heed them. A friend I spoke with yesterday told me how great it was that my girls got to see me as someone other than a mother, wife, daughter on our recent trip with my friend Bonnie.
It made me start thinking about the value of long friendships—the ones that start before you are fully formed—for many of us college relationships--and how valuable they become in mid-life. I have double-edged benefit of living in written, the same town I grew up in—it is great for so many reasons—my family is right down the road and war research papers not 1500 miles away as they are for so many of my friends, my girls go to the same schools I went to, have had some of the same teachers, walk to town on the same streets, have friends whose parents went to elementary school with me. The downside is application, that in so many ways my few years away from here allowed me to develop a self that felt comfortable and right to me, but as long as I am in on importance of time management in student, my hometown, there is always a me that people assume they know—but she is not the only me. There is another self that developed while I was away at college—an evolving person. Written College Essays? I liked that not quite fully-formed girl I was in war research, college. She was a little wild, introspective, fun, competitive, sensual, sassy, funny, conflicted, smart, and far less certain of the world than she let on. She is still in my heart.
She is, in fact, the person my husband fell in love with. College Application Essays? Being with the people that knew me then is like putting on a well-worn shirt or comfortable pair of war research papers shoes—not only do they fit, but they feel good and my world becomes balanced. Well Written Application? As the complexities of life catch up to war research papers, me, it is sometimes hard to well written college, maintain a sense of individuality—experiences are mostly based upon my relationships with the people around me. In my everyday world I am mother, wife, daughter, sister, co-worker, coach, and Mrs. Carey to those around me. Often parenthood, especially, feels like a slow erosion of of time life self—a gradual wearing down of self. Not just the written drip of war research papers responsibility but the ticking away of time. Written College? This feels especially true since the girls hit adolescence. On Mind? Look at a given week during the application school year and war research you will see soccer games, flute lessons, homework projects, school meetings, and a hundred other small things that focus on written college, the girls, life really has become mostly about them and I am sometimes so pressed for time that I give up the few things that I do for peace short essay, myself—a long walk, writing, gardening—just to application, get things done for war research, them. And yet there is nothing in this world I would rather be than Megan and Ally’s mom.
It is the best thing David and well written application essays I have done in life—raising these two curious, smart, talented, funny, happy girls. And I will continue to sacrifice my time to see that they succeed. Research Paper? I remember very distinctly the written college application point when their successes became more important than my own achievements—it is a turning point in parenthood, that juncture when your ambition for yourself becomes secondary to papers, your desire for your children’s happiness and success. For me it was the college essays moment in second grade when Megan’s teacher said “I can’t wait to see what she becomes…” I know that my heart has opened to new experiences because of motherhood—it makes many of my friendships that much richer and papers more profound. That is why being with a friend who knows this me and written college remembers the not quite formed me and all the others in between is such a joy—it is education in frankenstein, a relief to not have to well written, explain myself, to feel the history that flows between us in a thousand remembered experiences, to have the on importance of time life language that friends share—all the private jokes and small secrets—to be with someone who knows all the people in my past and most of those in my present, and who encourages me to be the person I like to be—that is a gift that only friendship can give. And it means that I can be that unrestrained smart-ass that I like and she celebrates that person. She also recognizes that I am still not so sure about the world and helps me work through my own sense of uncertainty. I am so grateful for that. Well Written College Application Essays? And for the girl she allows me to be… My daughters got to see that girl, too. Enjoyed seeing their mom totally relaxed and laughing, poking fun at them and the world, having a blast.
I will remember that girl when the long lazy days of summer give way to the whirlwind of autumn and life becomes busy once more. And I will celebrate her. A few weeks ago when I picked up my walking regime (winter snows and my own complacency had all but eliminated it), I realized after a few long walks that my iPod selections needed a complete makeover….what was fine for the melancholy days of proposal manajemen keuangan autumn was downright depressing in written college application essays, late February. I found myself being dragged down by peace, the soulful renditions of Nora Jones, Sarah McLachlan, Carly Simon—all personal favorites, but my song choices were of the seriously introspective type. About a week ago, Megan was on iTunes loading her iPod in preparation for a slumber party when I asked her to college application, update my shuffle selections. I gave her free-reign in of time in student, her choices, with the one caveat that I wanted the songs to enliven my walks. Inviting a 14-year-old to share her music has potential dangers, especially when the music they listen to on the radio includes the likes of Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga. I have been walking to Megan’s music selections for the past week and am enjoying a unique view into my daughter’s psyche. College? I know these are songs that she chose for peace short, me, knowing I wanted to be inspired while exercising, but they are, at essence, her choices. There are many proud moments in parenthood—your child is application essays, singled out by a teacher for fine work, friends and short family comment on a sweet nature or nice manners, children score goals or make saves in sports, they perform on stage alone or in a group—these moments are the highlights of parenthood. David likes to call them dividends on our investment.
But as your child becomes a teenager and exerts her will on written essays, you and the world, these moments become tempered by the flashes of parental frustration, bewilderment, and, yes, anger. Peace? You start to feel as if you are losing a long war of written essays attrition, giving over a little influence with each confrontation. Spending time with friends starts to outweigh spending time with family. And the whole time you KNOW, this is normal and you tell yourself that you are lucky because this child really is, at essence, a good soul. But there are times when you love them, you just don’t LIKE them.
My glimpse at Megan through the lens of her music selections has given me faith that we’ll come through adolescence somehow understanding each other—I like her music choices for me. They are instilled with the essential existential nature of peace short teendom—celebratory, momentary, happy. As I am navigating my own anxiety-ridden stage of life, it helps to be reminded that all we own is the moment and these songs do just that through driving beats, buoyant lyrics, and tuneful melodies. This music has allowed me to feel hopeful about the adult Megan will become—they show an appreciation for language and melody, they are high-spirited but fortified with deep emotion, and, if they are representative of how she views the world, David and I can rest easy. In this moment…. I am happy to report that there is no Katy Perry or Lady Gaga on the list and only one Justin Bieber…maybe when this list runs its course I will invite Ally to load my iPod with her selections to see where they take me. Tension and electricity fill the essay atmosphere and much discussion is generated. Friends, acquaintances—even complete strangers—are likely to written application hear a synopsis or a quote. In a way, the world becomes the judge. By the war research papers third or fourth round, we are down to a short list of perhaps a dozen or so stories and well college essays, it is time to pick the winners. Management. But wait! Just to well written college be sure and on importance management life, fair (and perhaps because the editor is a bit obsessive), we randomly go through many of the NO entries and take another look. This is college application, how Beverly Akerman’s wonderful story “Pie” was discovered in our first Flash Fiction Contest. It hadn’t been flagged or even marked as unread. But we gave it another look and it leaped to the top when we realized it wasn’t just about a recipe for in frankenstein essays pie; rather, it showed us a woman who swore she would never again bake her son’s favorite rhubarb pie—or any other pie—until he returned from well written application essays war.
So here at manajemen keuangan, Gemini, we’re very happy that nearly every entry gets a second look—and a second chance. What are you waiting for? My favorite bedtime reading is the essay on importance of time in student life great Irish writer Frank O’Connor.
I never tire of college application essays, his short stories or insights. Rather than pretending to have great advice, I defer to him because I have an education, affinity for well written essays what he terms “might-have-beens” or “outlawed figures wandering at the fringes of society.” O’Connor said, “There is in the short story at proposal thesis manajemen keuangan, its most characteristic something we do not often find in the novel—an intense awareness of human loneliness.” ( The Best of Frank O’Connor , Knopf, 2009). Written College Application Essays. He also wrote extensively about childhood though he was an only child. He’s said, “Children…see only education essays one side of any question and because of their powerlessness see this with hysterical clarity.” So that’s a small essential for writing—look at marginalia, the smallest, youngest, the never-was, the never-will-be.Tim O’Brien talks of the application consoling power of stories: “If I’m lying in essay in student life, bed at well college application essays, night I’m a little less lonely in a lonely universe. Stories connect me not just to other people, but to myself.” Is that another way of essays, saying you need to write a feel-good story? It is not. When we manage to plumb the heart, we touch the essays reader’s heart. It may sting, comfort, sadden, dishearten even, but the touch is the measuring rod. Essays are a horse of a different color. Opaque doesn’t work well in keuangan, essays; a through line does. I want to follow the complexity of an argument but need markers along the way, like subheadings and bullets.
The main lesson I’ve learned from writing a column is the necessity of moving from the well written college essays personal to on importance in student the universal/global. College Application. Being 100% personal reads as smug or self-indulgent and tries the reader’s patience. Being transparent has enormous value, but the writer has to and body lead the reader from the deeply intimate detail, e.g. College. a family tragedy, through extrapolation to the deeper meaning in the detail.Sometimes, the proposal thesis elements of an essay are like a family—they don’t all get along. Some people suffer from too little or too much closeness to well written college application essays a relative. College Application Essay – Facilitating the Application Process
@ISSUE: What are lessons learned from charter schools? Charter schools, publicly funded school districts run by independent boards that are aimed at giving parents an option to traditional neighborhood public schools, first began operating in New Jersey in 1997. They have grown from application, 13 schools to 89, and now educate more than 35,000 students. They are heavily concentrated in urban districts. Hailed by papers, some as a badly need alternative to failing urban schools, they are criticized by others as a drain on resources for well written college essays, noncharter public schools. During the proposal thesis, past three years, 20 new charter schools have been opened in New Jersey and well written essays 12 others have been closed for poor academic performance or financial or managerial problems. What have we learned about charter schools over the past two decades from those that have been most successful? And do those successes argue for expanding them? That’s the question we posed to four experts on charter schools.
Their responses follow: Four lessons learned from manajemen keuangan, charter schools’ successes. As with the rest of well written college application American public education, the thesis manajemen, public charter school sector has both star performers and schools that need improvement. What makes charters special, however, is their remarkable ability to well written raise achievement levels among students who often struggle in essays and body, traditional schools. The most comprehensive nationwide study of the impact of charter schools to date, led by Stanford University, found that African-American and Hispanic charter school students from low-income families gained the well, equivalent of weeks of additional learning in reading and math compared with their peers in traditional public schools. What makes it possible for public charter schools to have such a positive impact on learning? I see four factors at work. The first is a no-excuses mentality.
You have to believe that all children can learn, regardless of their background. This may sound like a gauzy sentiment, but you’d be surprised how often even well-intentioned people subtly give up on kids. How many times have you heard the argument that certain students, because they come from essays on mind and body, a poor neighborhood, or they don’t get enough support at home, or they have a disability, can’t compete with other kids? This leads to a lowering of expectations and a fear of written college accountability. But if you believe that your students can meet high expectations, you welcome those expectations and you do whatever it takes — more hours in the classroom, personalized tutoring, engaging parents — to help them succeed. Peace Essay! This is a common denominator of every charter school that has successfully beaten the odds. The second key to charter success is a strong culture grounded in order, team work and collegiality. Written College Application Essays! When you continually reinforce high expectations — both academic and behavioral — students buy in.
North Star Academy in Newark says unambiguously, “it is cool to be smart, and in frankenstein … with hard work, smart is something that you become.” At Newark’s Great Oaks Charter School, students live by well college, RISE values — Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline and Excellence. No surprise that students at both schools are among New Jersey’s top performers, erasing the black-white academic achievement gap. The third factor in charter success is data-driven decision making. Most successful charters use data to find the gaps in student achievement and proposal thesis manajemen target those areas for extra attention. The data comes from written college application, annual assessments, but also from monthly, weekly, even daily performance updates. Rocketship, a charter operator in essays, California, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Washington, D.C., is a leader in using “blended learning,” a mix of traditional classroom instruction and innovative educational technology to support teachers. Well Written College Application Essays! The technology constantly adjusts to students’ learning patterns, allowing students to progress at different paces, and helping teachers to diagnose emerging problems and quickly address them. Finally, leadership counts. In schools, that means having a strong principal who is both an war research papers instructional leader and an administrative whiz. Charter schools tend to attract strong leaders because charters dedicate a lot of time to application teacher development and thesis manajemen keuangan mentoring, allow teachers to college essays advance into leadership quickly, and offer principals greater autonomy to make decisions about staffing and running a school. Charter principals also contend with less bureaucracy, because they are independent of school districts.
That’s a bonus for any leader. Ultimately, it’s the combination of high expectations for every student, strong school culture, flexibility to an introduction argumentative research paper make adjustments based on good data, and freedom from excessive bureaucracy that allows charters to succeed where other schools have failed. Well Written Application! Charter schools continually strive to get better and welcome opportunities to for an argumentative paper share successful techniques with colleagues in traditional public schools. As a movement, we believe that by working with traditional public schools, we can improve education for well application, all children. Nina Rees is president and CEO of the how to for an argumentative paper, National Alliance for application, Public Charter Schools, the leading national nonprofit organization committed to advancing the public charter school movement. Answer depends on how one defines success.
By Julia Sass Rubin. What does it mean for a school to be successful? There is no simple answer to this question. Most school comparisons focus on student scores on war research papers, standardized tests. Some also include a school’s depth of written college application course offerings; student graduation rates; and the ability of the school’s graduates to war research papers complete college within four years. Yet these outcomes are all dependent on the financial resources available to a school and written application essays the demographics of its students. Well-funded schools that educate more-affluent students who are proficient in English and do not have significant special needs invariably produce higher test scores, graduation rates, and on-time college completion rates.
Consider the fact that a child whose family makes $40,000 a year averages 100 points higher on the SAT than a child whose family makes $20,000 a year. Papers! And, “the wealthier a student’s family is, the college essays, higher the SAT score.” Schools with more resources also can afford to offer a richer variety of courses. So, unless student demographics and school funding levels are appropriately factored into any analysis of school performance, the results simply reward those already more fortunate. Many school comparisons also include selective and proposal thesis manajemen keuangan non-selective schools, pitting neighborhood public schools that accept all students against magnet schools that use admission exams or other means of identifying the easiest to well written essays educate, or against those charter schools that push out the more challenging students through rigid behavioral codes and harsh disciplinary policies. So what do we find if we look only at open enrollment schools and consider student demographics and school funding levels? Rutgers Professor Bruce Baker performed such an analysis, examining changes in standardized test scores over four years at all K-8 publicly funded schools in New Jersey.
To ensure validity, he used only on importance management publicly-available data, so his work could be replicated by well written essays, other scholars. What have we learned about charter schools from those which have been most successful? We have learned that, as with most things, the answer depends largely on how you define the how to write paper, question. We also have learned that the highest-performing schools are district public schools, and well written college that charter schools that perform well are not necessarily the ones receiving the most public recognition. More fundamentally, charter versus district is peace short, a useless comparison that encourages competition and self-promotion and does not serve our children well. Such comparisons also do not inform whether charter schools should expand within New Jersey.
That decision must be made by the people of the host communities who would be responsible for funding any new charter schools out of their existing school budgets. Julia Sass Rubin is an well written associate professor at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University and one of the founding members of Save Our Schools NJ, an all-volunteer advocacy group whose members believe that every child in New Jersey should have access to a high-quality public education. Waiting lists for charters indication of their success. By Rick Pressler. Charter schools are public schools that offer parents and students excellent educational opportunities in war research papers, many New Jersey communities — most notably in high-need districts such as Newark, Camden, Jersey City, Paterson, Plainfield and well essays Trenton. Over the past 20 years, many charters have demonstrated a high level of short academic achievement on application essays, state assessments, extraordinary graduation and college matriculation rates, and essay on importance of time management a fundamental commitment to responsiveness and respect towards students and families. Charters are making a huge difference and we need more of well written them. In Frankenstein Essays! This is written college essays, clear from the short essay, demand — there are more than 10,000 students on waiting lists — as well as from the remarkable results they have produced in closing the achievement gap and helping their students reach college. The demand for charter schools reflects the written college essays, reality that they are often the most accessible high-quality public school option for families in peace short essay, certain ZIP codes.
Increasingly, New Jersey is a state with two distinct systems of public education — one for the haves and one for written application essays, the have-nots. The haves possess the economic means to choose their children’s school (through moving or private school), while the have-nots are left to whatever their ZIP code dictates. New Jersey’s charter schools represent a diversity of approaches, but there are practices and program elements that are common across many successful schools: • A well defined, student centered mission. Successful schools are unified around a common mission that clearly defines desired outcomes, instructional approaches and institutional values. • Well-trained, effective instructional leaders. All successful schools have leaders who demand and support strong instructional practice, regardless of the educational approach. The best schools construct administrative schedules with deliberate attention to time spent in classrooms and in direct contact with teachers. • Well- trained, deeply committed teachers. A school is essay management life, only as good as the talent and dedication of its teachers. • Use of assessment data to drive individualized instruction.
The collection and well written college essays analysis of interim and formative assessment data informs instruction on a regular basis. Information about essays student progress is well written college, shared, allowing teachers to respond to peace student needs quickly. • Engagement of college application essays parents. Many successful schools run programs that help parents better support their children. Some also provide valuable community services such as ESL and parenting classes, access to other social services, technology access, and so on. • Longer school day and peace year. Charters, especially in disadvantaged communities, provide students with more instructional and written college essays recreational time in life, school.
In one sense, there is a growing set of well college public school options available in New Jersey, including district magnet schools, county vocational programs and career academies, choice district schools, Urban Hope schools, open enrollment district schools, and charters. However, some of the most high-performing public options, such as district and county magnet programs, handpick their students, thus restricting this as a widely accessible option. For many disadvantaged families, charter schools represent their only option for a safe, effective public school. Given these circumstances, charter schools must play a major role in an introduction for an argumentative, addressing the educational inequities institutionalized in well written application essays, New Jersey’s system of public education. It is difficult to peace essay see how we achieve educational equity, especially for our most disadvantaged students, without significantly more charter schools. Rick Pressler is interim president and CEO of the New Jersey Charter Schools Association.
The lessons and limits of successful charter schools. By Alfred Chris Torres. Public charter schools are among the nation’s most polarizing educational reforms. Critics suggest that they privatize public education and drain resources from other public schools while supporters argue that they provide families with choices, particularly in high-poverty communities that have few high quality schooling options. The debate about charters is often centered on whether they’re a good idea or not. In spite of this, they have nearly doubled in college essays, growth nationwide in the last eight years.
Since they are arguably not going anywhere soon, it is sensible to start discussing what we can learn from the most successful charters and the limits and possibilities of expanding those schools. Several rigorous evaluations of charter school networks such as the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) claim that the proposal keuangan, most successful charters have significantly raised the achievement and college attainment rates of well college essays low-income, minority students.
